Seven Outstanding Students Awarded 2016 Horatio Alger Boise State Scholarships

Horatio Alger Association awards $10,000 scholarships to promising Boise State University students through the generosity of Member Robert G. Miller

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 28, 2016) – Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that seven students from Boise State University have been awarded Horatio Alger Boise State Scholarships in the amount of $10,000. Funded through the generosity of Association Board Member and 2012 Horatio Alger Award recipient Robert G. Miller, CEO of the Albertsons Companies, Inc., these scholarships are awarded to young men and women in recognition of their admirable commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities, despite facing significant personal adversity.

Established in 2012, the Horatio Alger Boise State University Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to students entering their final three years of study at Boise State University. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be Idaho residents who are current freshmen at Boise State University and must have at least a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). They should prove critical financial need and must also demonstrate integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity.

“Each year, it gives me great pleasure to award the Horatio Alger Boise State Scholarships to such an exceptional group of students,” said Robert G. Miller, Horatio Alger Association Board Member.  “They have triumphed in the face of serious challenges, rising above their adversities to forge a path to success. I have no doubt that these individuals will grow and thrive at Boise State University, and I am glad to partner with Horatio Alger Association to offer them the financial assistance needed to pursue a college degree.”

Horatio Alger Association was founded in 1947, and since 1984, it has administered one of the nation’s largest privately-funded, need-based scholarship programs. The Association has awarded more than $125 million in undergraduate, graduate and specialized scholarships to students from across the United States (including all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico) and Canada. In 2000, 16 years after the establishment of its National Scholarship Program, Horatio Alger Members began funding scholarships concentrated in each state to further the Association’s mission of helping deserving young people pursue their collegiate goals.

“Throughout my years of involvement in the Association, the caliber of our Scholars has never wavered,” said Tony Novelly, chairman, Horatio Alger Association“These young men and women continue to impress my fellow Members and me with their dedication to continuing their education and to bettering their communities. I am grateful to Mr. Miller for his admirable generosity in funding this scholarship program and his deep commitment to fostering the next generation of American leaders. ”

The 2016 Horatio Alger Boise State Scholarship recipients have maintained an average GPA of 3.76 while coming from households with an average annual income of $14,059.
